What is Google Local Optimization?

Google Local is a free service provided by Google. You can add your business listing for free at Google Places and when listed, your business will show up in the search results for local searches (see screenshot). Local results are only shown on the first page of Google and there are only 7 spots listed on that page. These sites get the majority of the traffic. Your goal, as a business owner, is to improve your own rankings so that you rank as highly as possible in Google's search results.

To do that, you have to increase the number of citations that point to your site. The more citations you have, the more likely your site will rank higher in a local search. Unfortunately, submitting citations can be an extremely time consuming process. You will need to do some intensive research to create a master list of citation sites. After that, you will have to spend hours submitting your business data into these sites in order to get listed.

What is a Citation?

A citation is a web page that lists your business information. In other words, the web page cites your business on the page. A citation usually includes important info about your business such as business name, primary products and services, and contact information. Usually, user reviews are also included.

Why are citations important for Local Search Optimization?

Search engines like Google rely heavily on citations to determine the validity of the business listing - i.e. is it a real business with a valid physical location? If many citations and reviews are found online on trusted citation sites, this means your business is likely to be a valid business. This leads to higher local rankings.
